Reliquary - Lidded Containers for Personal Relics with Greg Cochenet
9:00am – 5:00pm
Saturday and Sunday
March 29 - 30, 2025
My relics are everyday and found objects with meaning to me. A stone from a walk, an antique hinge from exploring an abandoned building, etc.
I love lidded vessels, and many of are titled, "Reliquary." In this workshop, I imagine participants would make a reliquary for a relic of their choosing. Day one would start with introductions and a demonstration of throwing a one-piece jar/box, among other vessels, and a slab built containe – possibly combining them for the final piece.
After the demonstration, I will give a brief artist talk about my work and influences, in addition to describing my use and interpretation of a reliquary. The second half of the day, participants would plan and begin working on their own reliquaries. Supplemental demonstrations and talks will be given as needed.
Day two would begin with finishing the pieces – separating the one-piece forms, trimming, clean-up, and finishing details such as carving and planning glazing strategies.
About halfway through, we can break so participants can share their relic and what, why they chose that object. The later half of the day will be for participants to finish their reliquaries. I (we) can structure this day to end with a very informal critique, or at least a walk-through, of the finished pieces.
