Learn to Work like a Studio Potter: Intermediate Wheel Throwing with Tony Arru

Below are some points we will focus on for two class periods each. However these are very much guidelines. We can explore these areas more, based on individual or group interest.
There will also be time for talking about and demonstrating other techniques that the student
might find it useful in their own personal clay journey.
Focus Points
1. Throwing Efficiently (2 classes)
A. Getting students to recognize how much clay is being left behind after they are “done” throwing.
B. Throwing cylinders and cutting them in half to check progress.
2. Pulling handles
A. Pulling handles and handle blanks
B. Attaching handles
C. Pulling handles off the pot
3. Making Lids
A. Forming a gallery (to accept the lid)
B. Throwing a lid
C. Trimming a lid
D. Knobs!
4. Making Sets
A. Using a throwing gauge
B. Repeating the same shape
5. Throwing bowls, plates and bottles.
A. Trying to master all kinds of shape.
